The Suzuki Samurai has always been known to be a great little off-road vehicle. They are light weight, easily modified, and you can have a lot of fun with them. In the off-road world you see a variety of Samurai’s built in many different ways from stock to full buggy builds. We recently had the opportunity to work on a super clean samurai and we wanted to share what we built.

Casey came to us asking for a very simple and sleek front bumper for his Samurai that would provide lots of protection but be light weight and still very functional. Here is what we came up with:

The plan was to build a bumper that did not incorporate a winch mount (which would weight down the front of the vehicle) but to incorporate a front receiver so that a multi-mount winch receiver could be used if winching was necessary from the front of the vehicle. The added benefit to this option is that Casey can use his winch both from the front and the rear of the vehicle.

The design of the bumper was kept very low profile and sleek to once again reduce weight. Although the design is small and sleek it still covers and protects all of the important points on the front of the vehicle. You will notice on the top of the bumper that we incorporated space to easily access the receiver pin.

The face of the bumper was made with 7 gauge pickled in oil plate and the mounting brackets were made of ½” material. The included d-ring tabs are ¾” plate that is cut on the water jet.

As you can see the finished product is awesome looking and effectively compliments the Samurai. The bumper was coated in a gloss black powder coat after being sand blasted and prepared for powder.

Two weeks ago we had a customer drop in who said he wanted to do a cage for his VW Buggy. We weren’t quite sure what he had in mind or even what the vehicle looked like so we asked him to bring it by the following week so that we could take a look and make a plan of attach.

The following week he shows up towing his buggy behind is Ford Super Duty. The buggy is a work in progress for him and he has decided to fix it up and make a summer cruiser out of it. His plan is to basically do a restoration and get it to where it is a fast looking run around car. He currently has a new motor being built for it and is collecting many of the parts to start putting it all together.

Our task was to make a cage that would help keep with the race car look of the buggy and to add style and some protection and lighting features. We also needed to keep the back seat area intact and usable for kids that would be filling those seats.

It didn’t take Steve long to come up with some great ideas that not only kept with the customer’s requirements but added to the overall look and feel of the buggy. Matter of fact we started adding a few other items because the cage was turning out so well. One of the coolest things that we added were small cut and notched tube pieces that will house LED brake lights and turn signals. The coolest thing about these lights is that they slide right inside the end of the tubing for a super clean, factory look.

Take a gander at the pictures below that follow the cage through some of the build and through its final stage. Recently we spent a couple hours on the Fault Line trail in St. George, UT while we were in the area. For those who are not familiar with St. George, UT it is a beautiful and highly scenic place located in southern Utah, about 20 minutes north of the Arizona border. Many of the landmark features are similar to Moab, UT. St. George features bright red slick rock along with high rising mountains, plateaus, and red sand dunes. For those who are also interested in photography and historic sites you will not be disappointed. Some of the options are numerous petroglyphs and even dinosaur tracks that are still visible today.

Those who are not familiar with the area would not consider St. George an excellent place to go off-roading, especially with Moab (the mecca of the off-road world) so nearby. If you know the area however you will quickly find that St. George is easily as fun and challenging as Moab and offers just as many trails and obstacles to tackle.

Directions:

The Fault Line trail can be accessed by taking exit 10 off of I-15 heading either north or south on the freeway. From I-15 you will head south on N 3050 E and turn east at the first light onto W State Street. Follow W State Street until you reach S 300 E. There will be a Dominoes’ pizza place on your left on the corner and you may also notice that W State Street turns into E Telegraph Street. Turn south on S 300 E and follow it down over the Virgin River until you reach E Washington Dam Road on your left. Take E Washington Dam Road heading east. You will follow this road until it turns from pavement to gravel. Keep going until you hit the fork in the road. The road will naturally take you to the right and up a hill that will then drop down into the starting point of the trail. You will cross a cattle guard and then there will be an open area to your right with hundreds of ATV and off-road trails. Follow the attached Google earth path to find the trail head.

Trail Description:

The Fault Line trail is a basic trail that offers some fun obstacles that most can tackle. It is a beginners trail that will excite and provide opportunities for beautiful photographic views and scenery. Most ledges are 24” tall or smaller. You will encounter some areas of very steep inclines and declines. There are a couple areas that will require spotters. There is no chance of body damage on this trail if taken slowly and with care.

Once you have completed the main portion of the trail there are numerous others that are off-shoots to other exciting and challenging trails. Be aware that some will require highly modified vehicles to complete and should not be done alone. CBI Offroad Fab – Trail Proven Adventure Ready

To start things off we want to share a project we did last year for a local county here in Idaho. A good friend of mine (brother-in-law) said that he couldn’t find a good front bumper for his new 2011 Ford Super Duty. He works for Jefferson County in the weed management department, and they use a variety of off-road vehicles to take care of their projects throughout the county. This requires them to get into some hairy situations in the surrounding mountainous areas they keep track of.

The new Super Duty would be a spray truck and would need to be able to get into some remote areas and difficult conditions along with having the ability to recover itself and other county vehicles.  Keep in mind that vehicles are loaded with thousands of pounds of extra weight in weed spray and equipment. Our task was to build a super strong front bumper that would protect the truck, while allowing for a 15,000 lbs winch to be installed.

This is what we came up with!

Here is the overall view of how it turned out. Pretty good looking for such an enormous bumper!

   All of the tubing on top of the bumper is .120 wall thickness. In an effort to not make the whole bumper look too bulky but to still have that “beefy” look we went with 2″ for the main center section and the headlight protection and 1 3/4″ for the braces in the headlight protection. Tubing is completely reinforced and symmetrically aligned to give it the maximum protection against impact.

Another important feature is the greatly increased clearances. Because the truck is usually loaded up with so much weight it is important that it doesn’t catch on or get hung up on any portion of the front bumper as it navigates rough terrain. The center section is greatly improved over the stock bumper setup for greater ground clearance and is designed to allow for objects to pass through easily with out catching. The sides are also designed for the same purpose to allow for more maneuverability off-road.

The sides of the bumper were finished with 3/16″ plate steel and reinforced and gusseted to protect the vulnerable corners. The slightly smaller plate size greatly reduces the weight of the bumper and the gussets greatly improve the strength for a good overall combination.

We provided for a bolt on skid plate to allow for easy winch service and to provide for a reinforced skid plate for bottom impacts.

To provide impact resistance on the body of the bumper to match the size of the vehicle and the weight we build the complete center section and mounting out of 1/4″ plate steel. This will greatly protect the vehicle from serious impact.
